25 Succulent Garden Ideas for Small Spaces

After seeing so many boring gardens, I knew I had to share some incredible succulent ideas with you guys. I decided it would be best (and more inspiring for all of us) to pull together a big list of my favorites.
I want to share as much as I can to help those of you who may be planning an outdoor project yourselves. So today I am mainly just going to show you a lot of pictures that I hope will get you excited!
1. Repurposed Broken Pot
When a pot breaks, I know the first thought is usually to toss it, but I’m asking you to hold on to it! You can create what I think is the most incredible garden feature using that broken pot.
You’ll just need a bit of creativity to make it happen. I love that depending on how the pot shattered, you can design a little succulent garden castle. You can even mix in other types of plants with your succulents.
2. Alphabet Display
This is such a beautiful way to show off a word you love. You could do your family name, some initials, or even a special word from a favorite quote. For this, you will need wood cuttings shaped like letters, which you then fill with a suitable planting medium.
I would pick the most colorful arrangement of succulents I could find for this one. This design brings so much brightness to a garden that you’ll want to have a party right away.
3. Ocean-Inspired Planter
If you love a seaside vibe as much as I do, this is a fantastic way to bring a piece of the ocean to your own home. You will need a glue gun, one of your terracotta pots, and a bunch of seashells from your last beach trip.
The idea is to use the seashells to completely cover the pot. Then just add your soil and plant a succulent of your choice. Be sure to think about the size of the succulent so you know if you should plant one or a few.
The size of the pot is also something to consider.
4. Garden Art Sculptures
Making a succulent plant sculpture in your garden can be a real showstopper. I think depending on how detailed the design gets, everyone who visits will be talking about it for a long, long time.
Just like with any other big design project, you’ll want to decide what you’re aiming for first. It could be an animal shape or even an object. You just create the design on the ground with the right soil and then plant your succulents to follow the pattern you’ve laid out.
5. Hanging Succulent Displays
The sound of chirping birds can be so relaxing, but having a pet bird is definitely not low maintenance. So, bring out a birdcage, hang it up, and let me tell you about something that comes close.
You can have succulents growing both inside and out of a hanging birdcage. I think this would look so great at a patio entrance or on a porch that looks out over the rest of your garden.
6. Spilling Succulent Waterfall
This is a really simple arrangement made with a single color of succulent. You can use a terracotta planter that you probably already have, but if not, you might want to find a planter made just for this.
The special ones have a flat side, so their normal position looks like they’ve been knocked over. Just place your planter in that “tipped over” spot and plant succulents inside it.
You’ll also want to plant a bunch on the ground to get that flowing water illusion. It’s so simple to design and very low cost.
7. Repurposed Watering Can
An old, forgotten watering can could be so much more, it just depends on you. I think succulent garden ideas don’t get much better than this.
You can upcycle a watering can to serve as a planter for both regular and hanging succulents. It can quickly become the main feature on your backyard table or a shelf.
8. Wheelbarrow Succulent Garden
Don’t overthink this one. It’s very likely you have everything you need to make it already. Just go into your shed and pull out that wheelbarrow you’ve let get rusty. This is a really great idea, especially if your garden doesn’t have much else going on yet.
It would look amazing and is perfect for a focal point in your garden. Your old wheelbarrow gets a new life as a planter. You can choose to paint it or leave the rusted look. You will want to get some suitable soil and maybe a few pebbles to add some texture to the arrangement.
9. A Rainbow Box
A colorful display is always so beautiful to see. You can put together a rainbow in a box and make it the center of attention the next time you have friends over. Get yourself a wooden planter, either square or rectangular, and carefully pick out succulents in a variety of colors.
Here’s a pro-tip: try to find the colors of the rainbow. While it looks amazing with only succulents, you might want to consider adding one or two other plants with broad leaves for a little variety.
10. Vertical Gardens for Walls
You definitely don’t have to keep your creativity inside a picture frame to get a vertical display of greenery.
Wall boxes are a super popular way to show off succulents vertically, but you could also hang individual planters on the wall, or even keep your succulents inside a wooden shape.
And of course, we have to talk about a full living wall when we’re discussing succulent garden ideas. If you’re feeling really ambitious in your planning, you could commit to covering an entire wall with succulents!
11. A Succulent Fountain
Did you know that you can go back in time with your flower arrangements? Well, now you do! A fountain dish, some succulents, and a few free-hanging plants are everything you need to create a look that will take you back decades.
It is the absolute perfect look for an afternoon garden party. Just be sure to dress the part so you can really go all in on the time travel theme.
12. Framed Plant Picture
Think about a picture frame, just without any pictures inside. Instead, what you have is a wild collection of colorful succulents in all different sizes.
You will need to get a moss foundation and attach it to the frame to pull this look off. By the time it’s all put together and hanging on your wall, it will be your new favorite frame.
13. House Edging
Do you have a little space between your lawn or patio and your house? That area usually has loose soil and is called a house border.
You can make it look so pretty with colorful succulents planted there. They are the perfect low maintenance plants for a busy person.
