A Guide to Creating Privacy in Your Backyard Haven

When I first planned my backyard, I thought the large modern trellis and pergola would be a dream come true. More privacy, better flow, easier entertaining. And in many ways, it did deliver on those promises.
But I also realized that when wood rot forced us to tear it all down, making a blank space feel cozy and secluded is a lot trickier than it looks. The key is not just fighting the openness, it is learning how to create definition within it.
You can have a private, serene space without building a giant fence. Let me show you how to transform your yard from one big undefined area into a beautiful, low maintenance retreat.
Gorgeous Greenery for Privacy
Plants are just the most amazing way to create a sense of privacy in your yard. I love how a beautiful natural barrier like the Thuja Emerald Arborvitae you see here can make such a huge difference, and they grow so fast!

And can we talk about trellises? There’s nothing like a modern trellis covered in gorgeous greenery like jasmine.
If you need something that grows quickly, trumpet vine is a great choice, but just know that you’ll have to keep it trimmed so it doesn’t take over everything! [image via Pinterest]
I’ve also seen some incredible custom built trellises, and if you’re handy, a DIY version could be a perfect project! [photo from Modern Garden]
If you are drawn to taller grasses, bicolor iris is another lovely option.

If a custom trellis isn’t in the budget, there are some really affordable choices out there. I found this metal grid trellis from Bonanza.
I also saw this one for under $70 from Hayneedle. Both of these are on the shorter side, but a small wall of greenery is always a good idea!

And for the ultimate low maintenance option, you can find some great faux boxwood choices, like the NatraHedge selections from Fence Screen or this selection from Artificial Plants Unlimited.
Adding That Special Touch
Besides privacy, every amazing outdoor space needs that little something extra to make it feel special. It’s that thoughtful touch that shows off your creativity! [image from Cyan Horticulture]
Some of my favorite ideas for those special features are beautifully arranged plants in modern pots, stepping stones, interesting groupings of native plants, water features, patio umbrellas, and comfy outdoor furniture.
I also adore how a gravel pathway can lead you to a favorite little spot in the yard! [photo below by Kate Simmons for Decoist]
Fencing for a Private Oasis
Having privacy in your yard can mean different things to different people. For me, it’s about finding a way to cover up the plain exterior of my neighbor’s house!
I love to look out and see a mix of pretty plants and features, like vine covered trellises. For some, privacy is all about defining your space, and nothing does that better than a privacy fence. [photo from Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design]
If you have a fondness for stone, some masonry work can result in a beautiful stone wall.

Horizontal planks are a fantastic choice, as you can see above. There are so many other possibilities too, like corrugated metal and hog wire fencing. [photo from AAA Fence Co.]
And don’t forget that you can be creative and dress up your fence! These Wall Planter Hooks from Crate & Barrel bring such an organic, modern touch to the planks in this next picture.
Basically, have fun with it while you create your own sacred space! For more great ideas on privacy fencing, check out this Decoist post.

Backyard Makeovers on a Budget
Sometimes creating privacy in your yard can feel like a huge project, way more involved than just putting up a trellis or planting a few shrubs. So how do you make an outdoor haven when you’re on a budget?
Landscaping companies often need a $20,000 project or more before they’ll even start. If you have the money, getting a talented landscape designer to create the perfect space is amazing. Their knowledge in picking the right plants is totally worth it.
But maybe you’re at a point where a project that big just isn’t possible. [photo below by Kate Simmons for Decoist]
Before you follow my lead, please be sure to do your own research! Just remember that the less experience you have, the more you’ll have to manage the project yourself.
For instance, a lawn care service that doesn’t specialize in landscaping might need a lot of your direction to help bring your dream yard to life. I’ve used this trick before and was so thankful that someone else was planting those huge, spiky blue agave plants for me!
