10 Genius Closet Organization Ideas You Need to Try

When I first look at a cluttered closet, the first thing I usually notice is that it’s not about the amount of stuff, but how it’s stored. What’s so interesting is that my friends and clients usually KNOW that something feels “off” in their closet, but they can’t quite pinpoint the problem.
The reason is that it’s so hard to be objective with our own spaces. I’m going to show you how you can spot these issues and fix them for good.
Label Your Storage
A little bit of labeling can honestly make such a big difference, especially if you’re like me and things can get cluttered fast. I love using a label maker to make sure I always know exactly where everything goes.
This trick works so well if you place your labels on bins or cute storage containers that hold all the little things. I always put my baskets on that top shelf in the closet to really take advantage of that extra room.
Coordinate by Color
One of the most common things I see in a closet is just a jumble of unorganized colors. Not only does that make it feel messy, but it can make you feel like nothing makes sense when you’re trying to find something.
You can change that so quickly just by color coordinating your clothes. Put every color that belongs together in its own group. This will get rid of that messy feeling and give all your clothing a proper home.
Add Shelf Dividers
You can totally fall in love with your closet again just by adding some shelf dividers. Shelving is so great for anyone who is a collector and wants to display their absolute favorite pieces.
There is something really special and unique about having your favorite things displayed just the way you want them. Plus, you can embrace putting folded clothes on your shelves and having them all showcased so neatly.
It really is all about getting the most out of your space.
Designate a Shoe Spot
Instead of having your shoes scattered around the room or tossed in a corner, it’s time to find a real place for them. Creating a dedicated spot for your shoes is one of the simplest ways to start reorganizing your room.
It’s all about showing off your shoes in the most cohesive way you can. Whether you put them in their own display case or line them up inside your closet, the whole idea is to have them working for you instead of adding to the clutter.
Bring in an Island
Sometimes you just want your closet to feel a little more upscale and, dare I say, luxurious. If that’s what you’re dreaming of, then bring in an island! It’s all about building an island that makes the whole room feel glamorous.
I love pairing it with a fun little sofa or chair to really complete the look. Not only are you getting a ton more storage from the island, but because you have this beautiful extra element, you’ll actually want to put your clothes away, which helps you avoid clutter.
Try Special Hangers
You heard me right, use some special hangers! It’s all about finding those slim, open hangers that let you file away your pants without them looking bulky.
I recommend stocking up on some of those slimmer wood hangers to let your clothing be the star of the show. You could even go for padded hangers for an extra layer of security for delicate items.
Add a Dresser and Mirror
If you’re one of the lucky ones with a walk-in closet that has somehow gotten crowded with clothes, it might be time to bring in a dresser with a mirror.
This can turn your closet into a complete station where you can not only get dressed but also do your makeup. On top of that, it becomes a little spot where you can just decompress at the end of the day.
Organize Thoughtfully
Before you even start organizing, take a really good look at how you actually use your closet. Are there certain spots or clothing items you reach for the most? Do you have some shoes you love more than others?
If so, now is the time to really look at how you use your clothes and organize from there. Place everything you wear often in a spot that’s super easy to grab and move the items you use less to the back.
Doing this will get rid of that cluttered feel and help you see what pieces you’re actually using compared to the ones that aren’t getting as much love.
Use Double Hanging
It’s all about making the absolute most of the closet space you already have. To do that, think about using double hanging. Double hanging is great because it lets you put as much clothing as possible in one spot.
Also, if you share your closet with a partner, it makes it so much easier to keep your essentials in one single area without taking away from whatever room they have left.
Behind Closed Doors
If you have any storage in your bedroom that has doors, it’s time to think about filling them up with clothes and shutting the door.
I know most of us would look at it and think, “well, I’m just going to fill that space with clutter,” but the key is to organize it really well.
Inside those compartments, you can fit a ton of clothing without taking away from the rest of your closet. On top of that, this lets your closet be just that, a closet, not a collector’s nest.
